More Reasons to Have Fish in Diet - February 2002

Thursday, August 28, 2003

A study in the Feb. 5 issue of Annals of internal Medicine reports “men who consume a typical ‘western’ diet – including high consumption of red and processed meats and high-fat dairy products – are much more likely to develop diabetes than those who consume a “prudent: diet of vegetables, fruits, fish, poultry and grains…. The study focused on more than 42,000 men, 40 to 75 years of age, over the course of 12 years.” And researchers at Oxford University and Imperial College School of Medicine, in London “have found that oily fish and leafy vegetables help behavior problems in children with dyslexia. Research… shows that children are less hyperactive when they have fatty acids in their diet. The acids are found in mackerel, sardines, salmon, tuna, nuts and leafy vegetables like cabbage and spinach.” The research found that the lack of these fats (Omega-3’s, found in oily fish such as salmon and mackerel) causes depression, autism, dyslexia, and ADHD (attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder) in some people. Reported by Worldcatch on February 14, 2002.
